Frostbolt CoC Comet Disciple — Full Guide (0.5.4)
Source: maxroll.gg/poe2/build-guides/frostbolt-cast-on-crit-comet-disciple-of-varashta-build-guide Version: Path of Exile 2 — 0.5.4 Class: Sorceress → Disciple of Varashta | Main skills: Frostbolt (+ Cast on Critical → Comet)
Build Overview
The build's core mechanic stacks three things on top of each other:
- Snakepit (left-hand unique ring): Frostbolt stops piercing and instead forks into 2 projectiles that explode on their second impact, instantly landing multiple hits on the same enemy.
- Cast on Critical (CoC): Frostbolt's dense multi-hits generate a flood of crit events, each one charging CoC.
- Comet: the CoC-triggered payload. Once the energy fills, Comets rain down around your main target for chained freezes + burst damage.
The secondary skill Frost Wall adds another layer: its Ice Crystals get smashed by Frostbolt projectiles, instantly producing extra AoE explosions + crit events — effectively turning the "wall" into detonatable ammunition.
Overall rhythm: freeze the whole screen while mapping → on bosses, detonate Frost Wall crystals with Frostbolt and stack CoC Comet bursts on top. Defensively, the build ends on the Chaos Inoculation (CI) route — switch to CI at 5,000–6,000 ES and abandon Life and chaos resistance entirely.
Skill Breakdown
Leveling (Acts 1–2, levels 1–32)
Warning: do NOT main Frostbolt before getting Snakepit at level 32! Without Snakepit, Frostbolt just pierces without exploding — the damage is terrible.
- Spark — levels 1–3, gets you to Clearfell Encampment.
- Frost Darts — replaces Spark from level 3; main clear + single target. Bursts after stacking Cold Infusion Remnants.
- Ice Nova — your main AoE clear; pick up Cold Infusion remnants before almost every cast (roughly a 3x damage difference).
- Frost Bomb — applies the Elemental Exposure debuff and replenishes nearby Cold Infusion Remnants.
- Snap — shatters frozen targets, generating more Infusions.
- Frost Wall — blocks enemies + creates detonation targets.
The single most important leveling rule: carry a Cold Infusion into nearly every Ice Nova / Frost Darts cast. Without an Infusion, you deal roughly 1/3 of the damage.
Mapping (level 32+, with Snakepit equipped)
- Frostbolt — main clear. Sweep as you walk; everything freezes.
- Recommended supports: Cast on Critical, Comet, Living Bomb (reduces Comet's mana cost), Pinpoint Critical (enable only after acquiring Maligaro's Virtuosity).
- Frost Wall — throw up a wall against elites / dense packs; Frostbolt shattering the crystals detonates them.
- Supports: Increased Area of Effect, Increased Critical Hit Chance for Spells.
Bossing (single target)
Pre-fight debuffs:
- Elemental Weakness — strips boss resistances.
- Frost Bomb — applies Exposure and litters the arena with Cold Infusion remnants.
- Sigil of Power — stand inside the circle for the damage bonus (requires the second weapon set's Chiming Staff for Spirit).
During the fight:
- Frost Wall right on top of the boss to plant Ice Crystals.
- Frostbolt sweeps across the boss, smashing the crystals → CoC triggers → Comet rain.
- Once the boss freezes, Snap instantly detonates the remaining hits of every nearby crystal.
- Otherwise, clean up leftover crystals with Ice Nova.
Auras / Buffs / Upkeep
- Sigil of Power — stand-in-circle damage, boss-fight setup.
- Mana Drain — an Attuned Wand on the second weapon set for mana sustain (replaceable with better solutions later).
- Pounce — short-range mobility via a Talisman on the second weapon set.
Skill Rotation (short version)
Mapping:
Frostbolt (main, cast while moving) → occasional Frost Wall → repeat
Bossing:
1. Elemental Weakness
2. Frost Bomb
3. Sigil of Power (stand in it)
4. Frost Wall (on top of the boss)
5. Frostbolt sweeps the crystals → CoC triggers Comet
6. Boss frozen → Snap detonates everything
7. Repeat 4–6
Ascendancy (Disciple of Varashta)
Take the nodes in order:
- Instruments of Power — lets you wield a Staff + Focus simultaneously. The Focus's ES is exempt from the 50% penalty, and its +1 to All Spells applies in full.
- The Fourth Teaching — cuts the ES Recharge start delay from 5s to 4s, a huge quality-of-life boost after CI.
- Sacred Rituals — reduces physical damage based on your current ES percentage; multiplies with other mitigation layers, key to late-game survival.
- Baryanic Leylines — Time-Lost Sapphire jewels gain the bonuses of nearby notables. With crit/ES-stacked sapphires, this converts directly into big stat lines.
Passive Tree
Pathing Priorities / Key Notables
Offensive notables:
- Thin Ice — big damage boost against frozen targets.
- Careful Assassin — crit chance foundation.
- Controlling Magic — crit chance expansion.
- Critical Exploit — crit damage multiplier.
Defensive clusters:
- Patient Barrier — ES multiplier.
- Melding — ES multiplier.
- Enhanced Barrier — ES multiplier.
- Dependable Ward — faster ES Recharge start.
Attributes:
- Use the INT / DEX / STR nodes along your path to meet gear + gem requirements.
- Surplus INT converts automatically into a bigger Mana pool.
Stat Priorities
Offense
- +Cold Spell Skill Levels / +All Spell Skill Levels (the key weapon / Focus stat)
- % Increased Critical Hit Chance for Spells (reach 70%+ before swapping Cast on Elemental Ailment for CoC)
- Critical Damage Multiplier (tree + Maligaro's locked 250%)
- Cast Speed (rings / amulet / notables)
- Cold Damage multipliers (lower priority than crit, but grab them when they're on your path)
Defense
- Maximum Energy Shield (% increases on gear → then flat ES)
- % Increased Energy Shield Recharge Rate (helm/chest/gloves/boots all work)
- Faster Energy Shield Recharge Start (Dependable Ward)
- 75% elemental resistances (pre-CI)
- Life (leveling / early maps, until CI)
- Chaos Resistance — completely unnecessary after CI

Core Uniques Explained
- Snakepit (Ring) — build-enabling. Frostbolt stops piercing and forks instead.
- Maligaro's Virtuosity (Gloves) — locks crit damage at 250%, letting you run Pinpoint Critical without the damage penalty.
- Time-Lost Sapphire (Jewel) — pairs with Baryanic Leylines to absorb crit / ES lines from nearby notables.
- Mageblood (Belt, chase) — permanent utility flasks; recommended: Legacy of Quicksilver / Diamond / Bismuth / Silver.
- Chiming Staff (second weapon set) — supplies the Spirit needed for Sigil of Power.
Mana Sustain
Campaign / Early Maps:
- Equip the highest-level Mana Flask available and roll the "% Increased Amount Recovered" prefix.
- Roll Recover 2% Of Maximum Mana On Kill on a jewel (basically solves mapping mana).
- Take % Mana Regeneration Rate on the tree.
- At 160 Spirit, add Mana Remnants for further supply.
Boss fights (critical):
- The Mana Flask is your primary resource.
- Stack +To Maximum Mana on gear/tree.
- Use % Increased Flask Mana Recovery Rate.
- Take % Reduced Mana Cost of Skills.
- Keep Living Bomb at level 3 to lower Comet's trigger cost.
Late game:
- Cast on Critical auto-triggers Comet, actually easing your direct casting pressure.
- Mana Remnants triggered via the tree keeps you topped up automatically.
Playstyle Tips
- No Frostbolt before 32: without Snakepit it's a wet noodle. Lean on Ice Nova + Frost Darts.
- Cold Infusion is your lifeline: stack an Infusion into nearly every cold cast while leveling, or your damage falls off a cliff.
- The crit threshold: only swap Cast on Elemental Ailment for Cast on Critical once Frostbolt hits 70% crit chance.
- Frost Wall placement: put the Ice Crystals directly in enemy pathing and let them walk into the detonation.
- Weapon set division: put Elemental Weakness + Frost Bomb on the second weapon set to benefit from that set's passive nodes; everything else on the first.
- ES Recharge priority: after Patient Barrier / Melding / Enhanced Barrier, prioritize % ES Recharge Rate on gear.
- CI timing: switch to Chaos Inoculation at 5,000–6,000 ES; after the switch, every Life / Chaos Res affix becomes ignorable.
- Bosses can't be chain-frozen: a boss can only freeze once every few seconds, so don't build your single-target around freeze loops — stack CoC hit counts instead.
Summary
| Dimension | Details |
|---|---|
| Core mechanic | Snakepit makes Frostbolt fork + explode; the flood of crits feeds Cast on Critical to trigger Comet |
| Clearing | Frostbolt sweeps (post-32), Frost Wall handles hard targets |
| Single target | Frost Wall + Frostbolt crystal detonations → CoC Comet downpour |
| Ascendancy path | Instruments of Power → The Fourth Teaching → Sacred Rituals → Baryanic Leylines |
| Key uniques | Snakepit (mandatory), Maligaro's Virtuosity, Time-Lost Sapphire, Chiming Staff, Mageblood (optional) |
| Defensive pivot | Life/ES hybrid → switch to Chaos Inoculation at 5–6k ES |
| Mana sustain | Flask + 2% on kill jewel + Mana Remnants + low-level Living Bomb |
| Crit threshold | Swap to Cast on Critical at 70%+ |
All told, this build marries the "freeze everything" mapping feel with the "Comet rain" single-target burst. The price: you have to honestly play Ice Nova until Snakepit arrives, and mana management stays finicky. Once the gear is in place, it's one of the smoothest CoC caster builds in the game.
