Poisonburst Arrow Pathfinder — Full Guide (0.5.4)
Source: https://maxroll.gg/poe2/build-guides/poisonburst-arrow-pathfinder Version: Path of Exile 2 — Return of the Ancients 0.5.4 Class: Ranger → Pathfinder | Main skills: Poisonburst Arrow Last updated: 2026-06-25
Build Overview
This is a high-efficiency poison bow build centered on Poisonburst Arrow and the Pathfinder ascendancy. The core loop:
- Poisonburst Arrow fires arrows that apply multiple poisons in a wide area on contact;
- Herald of Plague automatically spreads your strongest poison to nearby enemies;
- Spreading a poison triggers Bursting Plague — monsters explode for a percentage of their maximum life, chaining explosions through the pack for one-button screen clears.
- Pathfinder's Overwhelming Toxicity doubles the maximum poison stacks per enemy, while Running Assault grants Heavy Stun immunity while Sprinting and superb repositioning — letting you weave between attacks without slowing your clear.
Early leveling requires a multi-button kit (Lightning Arrow / Frost Bomb / Gas Arrow) since monsters are tanky, but once your ascendancy is complete, the build evolves into one-button clearing + multi-button bossing.
Skill Breakdown
Leveling
Level with lightning/cold, then convert to poison at level 22 (after completing the Trial of the Sekhemas for Overwhelming Toxicity).
| Skill | Use | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Lightning Rod | Opener | Starting skill, early main clear |
| Lightning Arrow | Main damage | Chains off Lightning Rod |
| Frost Bomb | Bosses/elites | Applies Exposure to lower cold resistance |
| Stormcaller Arrow | Late-leveling relay | Especially strong once you have Herald of Thunder |
| Gas Arrow | Poison transition | Persistent poison clouds; multi-stacks poison with Scattershot |
Transition timing: at level 22, after your first ascendancy grants Overwhelming Toxicity, respec fully into poison nodes and switch to a physical bow (note: elemental damage doesn't scale poison at this point — not until Plaguefinger).
Mapping
Mapping is essentially one button: Poisonburst Arrow → the pack detonates.
| Skill | Role |
|---|---|
| Poisonburst Arrow | Main clear; every enemy in the arrows' area gets poisoned |
| Herald of Plague | Spreads your strongest poison to surrounding enemies |
| Bursting Plague (support) | Triggers when poison spreads — enemies explode for % max life |
Bossing (single target)
| Skill | Role |
|---|---|
| Toxic Growth | Spawns pustules at the boss's feet |
| Gas Arrow | Detonates pustules + stacks multiple poisons |
| Poisonburst Arrow | Also detonates pustules for burst damage |
| Vine Arrow | Slows + amplifies damage over time on poisoned enemies |
| Despair | Curse; massively lowers boss chaos resistance |
Key support: Garukhan's Resolve — double crit chance / a chance for crit damage to double again. Recommended in Toxic Growth (or your main skill). Alternative: Blindside.
Auras / Buffs
| Skill | Benefit |
|---|---|
| Wind Dancer | Big "more" Evasion; when hit, Gale Force blinds and poisons attackers |
| Ghost Dance | Restores Energy Shield based on Evasion when hit |
| Withering Presence | Auto-stacks Wither around you, increasing chaos damage taken by enemies |
| Herald of Thunder | Supports clear during the Stormcaller Arrow phase |
Skill Rotations
Mapping (one-button):
Poisonburst Arrow → poison spreads → Bursting Plague chains → reposition, keep firing
Elites / tanky leftovers: add Toxic Growth
Bossing (multi-button):
1. Pre-cast at the boss spawn: Vine Arrow + Despair
2. Boss appears → maintain Vine Arrow / Despair debuffs
3. Toxic Growth spawns pustules → detonate with Poisonburst Arrow / Gas Arrow
4. Loop the Toxic Growth detonations until the boss dies
5. Refresh Vine Arrow + Despair as needed
Ascendancy (Pathfinder)
Take the nodes in order:
- Overwhelming Toxicity — doubles maximum poison stacks per enemy (cost: -35% poison duration, offset by frequent Toxic Growth detonations). The foundation of the entire build.
- Path Seeker (with its adjacent small nodes) — 5 passive points total, essentially a free expansion.
- Relentless Pursuit — immunity to all Slows (Chilled Ground / Temporal Chains, etc.), a huge mapping mobility upgrade.
- Running Assault — 50% less Movement Speed penalty while using skills; Heavy Stun immunity while Sprinting, rewarding active dodging.
Passive Tree
Pathing Priorities / Key Notables
The original doesn't list specific notable names (full node IDs require the planner), but it clearly emphasizes these groups:
- Critical Strike Chance — a high-crit bow makes the tree's crit nodes pay off massively
- Poison Damage (increased poison damage + duration + ailment magnitude)
- Evasion / Life double-track expansion (main defensive layer)
- Subterfuge Mask — the key gate: only after allocating it can you wear a pure ES helmet
- Attribute nodes — just enough Int / Dex for gear + gems, everything else into Strength for max Life
Progression milestones
- Early: Life + Elemental Damage
- After the Lv22 ascendancy: respec fully into Poison + Evasion nodes
- Midgame: transition from pure Evasion to Evasion / ES double-track
- Late: unlock Subterfuge Mask, bringing the pure ES helmet online
Stat Priorities
Offense (high to low)
Iron rule: poison inherits the damage composition of the hit that applied it — a poison from a physical hit does NOT benefit from chaos damage modifiers applied post-hit.
- Your bow is everything: high physical + (after Plaguefinger) high elemental
- +# Level of all Projectile Gems
- % increased Damage (any type)
- +# Intelligence / Dexterity (to meet gear/gem requirements)
- # to Fire / Cold / Lightning / Physical Damage to Attacks
- % Global Physical Damage
- % Increased Attack Speed
- Gain % as extra Phys/Chaos/Fire/Cold/Lightning
- Bow Attacks fire an Additional Arrow
- % increased Chance to Shock
- % increased Mana gained per Enemy Killed
Rough jewel affix priority:
- % Inc Damage with Bows
- % Inc Global Physical Damage
- % Inc Evasion Rating
- Recover # % of Mana on Kill
- % Inc Projectile Damage
- % Inc Attack Damage
- % Inc Magnitude of Ailments
- % Inc Magnitude of Poison
- % Inc bonuses from Equipped Quiver
% Inc Movement Speed
- % Inc Poison Duration
- % Inc Attack Speed with Bows
- % Inc Attack Speed
- +# % to Energy Shield
Defense (high to low)
- All four resistances (elemental + chaos) capped at 75% (mandatory)
- + Maximum Life
- Evasion Rating (your main avoidance source)
- Energy Shield (recovered on hit via Ghost Dance)
- Wind Ward (instant on-hit, massively raising your max single-hit survivability)
- Movement Speed (active dodging)
- Blind (reduces enemy accuracy)
Gearing Strategy
Campaign
| Slot | Priority affixes / notes |
|---|---|
| Bow | High Physical Damage above all; other damage types don't scale poison (until Plaguefinger); socket damage Runes |
| Body / Helm / Gloves / Boots | Life + Evasion + resistances |
| Belt / Amulet / Rings | Attributes + Life + resistances |
All-purpose vendor regex:
"ts: S|\d+% i.+mov|d Ph|ds .+Da|ll P|k Sp"
Searches: Sockets / Move Speed / Inc Phys / Flat Phys / Flat Ele / Projectile Skills Level / Attack Speed.
Early Mapping
| Slot | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Bow | Slivertongue (usable at level 39) carries you all the way to red maps |
| Quiver | Cadiro's Gambit (superb value bridge); or Visceral Quiver for crit |
| Body | Hybrid Evasion/ES base, max out Life / ES / resistances |
| Helmet | Eva/ES hybrid until you have Subterfuge Mask, then pure ES |
| Gloves / Boots / Belt / Jewelry | Keep stacking Life + ES + Evasion + resistances |
Endgame
| Slot | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Bow | Voltaxic Rift (chaos damage can Shock, freeing up Lightning affix space; lower crit but poison doesn't mind); or a high-crit physical bow |
| Bow / Off-hand | Rigwald's Ferocity locked in the swap; set Poisonburst Arrow to Weapon Slot 2 in the gem panel |
| Quiver | Maximize "bonuses gained from Equipped Quiver"-related affixes |
| Body | Eva/ES hybrid or pure ES |
| Helmet | High pure ES (requires Subterfuge Mask allocated first) |
| Gloves | Plaguefinger — the true gear-pool liberator: elemental damage starts scaling poison, activating every elemental affix on jewels/bow |
| Belt | Headhunter (mapping BiS); or Ryslatha's Coil (physical-route alternative) |
| Jewel | Megalomaniac / Heart of the Well / From Nothing |
The original provides 4 complete gear templates: Campaign / Maps / Voltaxic Hybrid / Physical Hybrid.
Mana Sustain
Neither Poisonburst Arrow nor Gas Arrow is cheap per shot — without a plan, your clear stalls. Run all three at once:
- Your best Mana Flask
- A Sapphire Basic Jewel with at least 1 line of Recover 2% of Mana on Kill
- Gain # Mana per Enemy Killed on your Bow / Quiver
Quoting the original: "a Sapphire Jewel with % of Mana on Kill and a source of Gain # Mana per Enemy Killed from either your bow or quiver smooth out any mana issues you have".
Playstyle Tips
- The bow sets your ceiling — "Your Bow is everything: High Physical Damage and Elemental Damage roll on top makes or breaks your build".
- Poison inherits the hit's damage composition — poison from a physical hit doesn't benefit from chaos damage modifiers (a common misconception).
- Scattershot is excellent early in the poison transition — multiple projectiles per shot = multiple poison stacks per shot.
- Check and upgrade gem quality daily — the damage gain is significant.
- Withering Presence auto-stacks Wither — boosting chaos damage taken by enemies and dramatically speeding up boss fights.
- Subterfuge Mask is the key gate — don't switch to a pure ES helmet before allocating it.
- Before Plaguefinger, don't chase elemental stats on gear — pure physical / chaos affixes only.
Optional Campaign Buffs
The original notes: "These bonuses are minor, if you picked something different, don't worry too much!"
| Act / Location | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Act 2 / Valley of the Titans | Medallion (+30% Charm Charges / +1 Charm Slot) |
| Act 3 / Venom Crypts | Venom Draught (+25% Stun Threshold) |
| Act 4 / Halls of the Dead | Resistance test (+5% to one resistance) |
| Act 4 / Abandoned Prison | Goddess of Justice (+30% Flask Mana Recovery) |
| Interlude 2 / Qimah | Seven Pillars (+15% Global Defences) |
Summary
- Strengths: the natural synergy of Pathfinder's doubled poison stacks + spread + explosions; one-button clearing; Heavy Stun immunity while Sprinting and full Slow immunity for elite mobility; a lean main-key layout.
- Weaknesses: early leveling needs multiple skills and tanky mobs feel rough; gearing "gates" at Plaguefinger and Subterfuge Mask; the bow is the build's core, so drop/craft luck matters.
- Who should play it: anyone who wants a satisfying clearer + durable mapper + boss-capable bow build and doesn't mind restructuring gear/passives around Plaguefinger and Subterfuge Mask in the mid-to-late game.
