Plant Disciple of Varashta — Full Guide (0.5.4)
Source: https://maxroll.gg/poe2/build-guides/disciple-of-varashta-plant-build-guide Version: Path of Exile 2 — Return of the Ancients 0.5.4 Class: Sorceress → Disciple of Varashta | Main skills: Entangle + Thrashing Vines + Thunderstorm (plant / thunderstorm detonation) Author: Goratha | Last updated: 2026-06-27
A note on the "Living Bomb" name: the core loop in the original maxroll guide is "spread vines with Entangle → water them with Thunderstorm → detonate via Accelerated Growth" — it does NOT use the in-game skill actually named Living Bomb. The parent directory files this under the Plant_Disciple_of_Varashta (plant archetype) branch.
Build Overview
This is a Sorceress ascendancy build whose core loop is nature summons + thunderstorm detonations.
- Entangle: spam vines that auto-target enemies and blanket the area in AoE, stacking up to 12.
- Thunderstorm: cast it on top of your vine pile to trigger Accelerated Growth explosions — your main map-clear damage.
- Thrashing Vines: the big vine (limited to 1 by default; raise the cap with Idol of Uldurn or Overabundance I) that automatically whips a single target — your primary boss DPS.
- Sigil of Power: the spell-charging circle on Weapon Set II; at 4 stages your damage skyrockets.
The build follows a life/ES hybrid → CI (Chaos Inoculation) energy-shield progression:
- Through the campaign you survive on resistances + life + armour.
- From mid-game onward, The Fourth Teaching (ES recovery) + Sacred Rituals (ES converted to physical damage reduction) + the CI keystone turn you into a full ES build.
Pros
- No mandatory uniques: extremely cheap to start — every slot can be filled with rares.
- Excellent clear: Entangle auto-targets and hits off-screen; one Thunderstorm lights up the whole pack.
- Reliable single target: Thrashing Vines whips away on its own, freeing you to dodge or weave in other skills.
- Great survivability: after the CI swap you get a huge ES pool, physical damage reduction, and ailment immunity — very forgiving.
- Smooth gameplay: the skill interactions have great QoL; very beginner-friendly.
Cons
- Hungry for gem levels: nearly all of your damage scales off
+Physical / +Spell Skill Gems, so gear hunting never really stops. - Must stack ES later on: body armour, amulet, and rings all have to make room for ES mods.
- Mana management: once Thunderstorm comes online mid-game, mana costs spike — solve it with Shock Conduction I / Mana Remnants.
- Weapon-set juggling: different skills need to be bound to Weapon Set I/II, which takes some learning.
Skills In Depth
Leveling (Lv1–13)
Your placeholder kit before Thunderstorm comes online:
- Entangle — your single-target foundation; start spreading vines from the very beginning.
- Essence Drain + Contagion or Orb of Storms + Spark — main damage source (pick one line based on your starter gems).
- Arctic Armour (Spirit gem) — slows enemies for crowd control.
- Volcanic Eruption — capped at 1; save it for elites / bosses.
Mid-Campaign (Lv14–30)
Once you have Accelerated Growth I, the core loop comes together:
- Entangle + Accelerated Growth I — your main clear combo, up to 12 stacks.
- Thunderstorm — triggers Accelerated Growth detonations.
- Orb of Storms — supplementary damage.
- Barkskin (Spirit) — stacks armour + energy shield.
Endgame Clear
- Entangle (main) — just spam it.
- Thunderstorm — cast on top of the vine pile to trigger explosions.
- Supports: Living Lightning (extracts impale into elemental damage), Shock Conduction I (spawns Mana Remnants for mana sustain).
Endgame Single Target
- Thrashing Vines + Heft + Considered Casting — primary single-target DPS; the big vine whips automatically.
- Entangle — pre-stack a few casts before the boss.
- Thunderstorm — keep "watering" the vines.
- Sigil of Power (Weapon Set II) — place it before the boss spawns; the blue charging circle at 4 stages is a massive damage multiplier.
- Kelari's Brutality (the Command skill from Barya of Kelari Djinn) — applies the Critical Weakness debuff, and paired with Kurgal's Leash it triggers Unholy Might.
Auras / Buffs (Spirit reservation)
| Name | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Sigil of Power (Weapon Set II) | 4-stage charge-up, main single-target burst |
| Barkskin | Armour / ES padding |
| Arctic Armour | Campaign slow-and-survive |
| Convalescence | First to drop if Spirit runs tight |
Support Gem Priority
- Accelerated Growth II (Tier 5, the cornerstone of Entangle detonations)
- Living Lightning (impale extraction + elemental scaling)
- Heft (Thrashing Vines damage)
- Considered Casting (Thrashing Vines — stacking spell damage per cast)
- Shock Conduction I (Thunderstorm mana sustain)
- Overabundance I (+Entangle cap, at the cost of duration)
- Unleash (extra Orb of Storms casts)
Skill Rotation
Mapping:
- Hold down Entangle as you run (auto-target, off-screen hits).
- Drop one Thunderstorm on top of the vine pile → screen-wide explosion.
- (Optional) keep Arctic Armour up for the slow.
- Repeat.
Bossing:
- Place Sigil of Power before the boss spawns and let it charge.
- Cast Kelari's Brutality (Command) to apply Critical Weakness + Unholy Might.
- Cast Entangle 3–5 times to stack vines.
- Set up Thrashing Vines and let the big vine whip away.
- Keep casting Thunderstorm to trigger detonations.
- Repeat steps 2–5.
Ascendancy (Disciple of Varashta)
Disciple of Varashta's ascendancy tree has no intermediate travel nodes, so your first trial goes straight into two Djinn:
| Order | Node | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Barya of Ruzhan | First trial: spells trigger automatic attacks — maxes out early DPS. |
| 2 | Barya of Kelari | First trial: the Command skill Kelari's Brutality → Critical Weakness, and with Kurgal's Leash it triggers Unholy Might. |
| 3 | Instruments of Power | Second trial: wield Staff + Focus simultaneously — core damage + attribute amplification. |
| 4 | The Fourth Teaching | Third trial: faster ES recovery, with a bonus recovery rate at low ES. |
| 5 | Sacred Rituals | Fourth trial: physical damage reduction equal to your current ES percentage — the key to the CI transition. |
Note: Disciple of Varashta's tree is a "pick-one-of-two Djinn" structure with no travel nodes, so the first trial must take both Barya nodes.
Passive Tree
Campaign Route
- Wildsurge Incantation (Keystone) — the core damage keystone for Entangle / Thrashing Vines.
- Boundless Growth — plant cluster damage.
- Constricting — plant cluster, stacks the Hindered debuff.
- Cut to the Bone — Armour Break / Impale Chance for physical spells.
Mid-Game Transition
- Pick up enough Int / Dex / Str nodes to meet gear / gem requirements.
- Path through spell damage + cast speed nodes on the way to Wildsurge Incantation.
Endgame CI Tree
- Chaos Inoculation (Keystone) — ignore chaos resistance; your ES becomes your health pool.
- Abasement — converts ES into stun threshold (mandatory after CI).
- Shimmering Mirage — ailment immunity (mandatory after CI).
- If you move Thunderstorm to Weapon Set II, you can also path into the Shock Magnitude cluster.
Mana Management (optional)
- Mind Eraser — conditional mana recovery.
- Instilling Efficient Casting — reduced mana costs.
- Or simply run a "Mana on Kill" jewel.
Exact passive tree node IDs are not exposed in the public HTML because the Maxroll planner renders via JS — open the planner URL for precise allocations.
Stat Priority
Offense (in order of impact)
- +Physical Gem Levels / +Spell Gem Levels (Staff / Focus / Amulet first)
- %Spell Damage / %Spell Physical Damage
- Critical Strike Chance & Critical Damage Bonus (spell + generic)
- Cast Speed (QoL, Thrashing Vines frequency)
- Damage Gained as Lightning / Cold / Fire / Chaos (converted elemental damage benefits from Living Lightning)
- Increased Duration (plant uptime)
- Increased Area of Effect (clear quality)
Defense (by stage)
Campaign:
- Resistances (75% all)
- Life
- Armour
Mid-game:
- Start accumulating ES
- Maintain resistances
- Life + armour (hybrid phase)
Endgame (after the CI swap):
- Maximum Energy Shield (replaces life as your effective HP)
- 75% all resistances (especially critical after CI)
- Abasement (stun threshold)
- Shimmering Mirage (ailment immunity)
Gearing
Campaign
Priorities:
- Resistances (all at 75%)
- Life
- +Physical/Spell Skill Gems on Staff / Wand / Amulet / Focus (core damage)
- Early armour for mitigation
Recommended uniques:
- Bushwhack () — physical hits can Pin; defensive utility.
- Idol of Uldurn () — raises the Thrashing Vines cap for a big single-target boost.
Key habit: check vendors every time you return to town for +Skill Levels weapons / amulets / foci.
Early Mapping
| Slot | Focus |
|---|---|
| Body armour | Raw Energy Shield first |
| Weapon (Staff) | +Physical/Spell Gem Levels |
| Off-hand (Focus) | +1 Spell Skill Gems (becomes +2 with the ascendancy +1, rounded down) |
| Rings | Cast speed, resistances, attributes |
| Amulet | +Spell Skill Gems, Spirit (if you're short) |
Unique alternatives:
- Nightscale — crit chance (needs high base crit to offset its downside)
- Seed of Cataclysm — damage at the cost of mana
Endgame CI Swap
| Slot | Mods / Unique |
|---|---|
| Helmet | Socket Amanamu's Gaze () — Command skills remove Ignite; mandatory for CI |
| Body armour | Highest-ES rare you can find |
| Gloves | Resistances + attributes |
| Boots | Resistances + movement speed |
| Amulet | +Spell gems / Spirit / resistances |
| Rings | Cast speed / resistances / attributes / ES |
| Weapons (main set) | High +gem Staff + high +gem Focus |
| Weapons (swap set) | Effigy of Cruelty () — Thunderstorm applies Critical Weakness; Sigil of Power staff |
| Belt | Headhunter () as the dream item, or Ingenuity on a budget |
| Amulet alternative | Stone of Lazhwar () — trades block for damage, optional |
Charms: Golden Charm + Silver Charm (for charge generation).
Mana Sustain
| Stage | Solution |
|---|---|
| Campaign | Barely an issue — Thunderstorm isn't online yet |
| Mid-game (Thunderstorm online) | Link Shock Conduction I to Thunderstorm → spawns Mana Remnants → mana back on hit; self-sustaining in dense packs |
| Endgame | Spirit on Amulet (best global option); keep Shock Conduction I on Thunderstorm; drop Convalescence if Spirit is capped; optionally Mind Eraser or a mana-on-kill jewel |
Keeper of the Flame / mana regen nodes add little on top of this setup — skip them.
Tips & Tricks
- Farm vendors:
+Physical / +Spell Skill Gemsmods appear on vendors constantly — keep upgrading your Staff / Focus / Amulet. - CI timing: only allocate Chaos Inoculation once your body armour ES is up to par.
- Weapon-set setup: Weapon Set I holds Entangle + Thrashing Vines; Weapon Set II holds Thunderstorm. The UI can swap sets per skill automatically.
- The Living Lightning trick: adding Living Lightning to Thunderstorm extracts impale into elemental damage (spells normally can't impale) — this is your core elemental damage source.
- Thrashing Vines cap: base limit is 1; raise it with:
- Idol of Uldurn (recommended, no downside)
- Overabundance I (cheap but reduces duration)
- Entangle cap: the base 12 stacks are enough — prioritize Accelerated Growth detonation frequency instead.
- Pin mechanic: early Bushwhack lets your physical damage Pin, locking enemies down for safety.
- Ignite management: after the CI swap, Ignite interrupts ES recovery, so Amanamu's Gaze (Command removes Ignite) is near-mandatory.
- ES physical mitigation: Sacred Rituals sets your physical damage reduction to your current ES percentage — with a huge CI pool the mitigation is enormous.
- Critical Weakness uptime: Kelari's Brutality applies Critical Weakness, and socketed in Kurgal's Leash your Command grants Unholy Might automatically.
Summary
Plant Disciple of Varashta is a Sorceress build with solid game feel, smooth damage scaling, and outstanding survivability:
- Low barrier to entry, no mandatory uniques.
- A straightforward ascendancy path — all five nodes pull their weight.
- CI + Sacred Rituals provide massive forgiveness in the late game.
- The "vine detonation + automated single target" playstyle lets you focus on positioning — great for players who dislike face-tanking.
Its only real pain point is the endless appetite for +Skill Gem mods — every gear upgrade jumps your DPS a full tier, so get ready to farm those vendors.
