Cold Minion Lich — Full Guide (0.5.4)
Source: https://maxroll.gg/poe2/build-guides/frost-mage-lich-build-guide Version: Path of Exile 2 — 0.5.4 Class: Witch → Lich | Main skills: Summon Skeletons (Sniper / Arsonist / Storm Mage / Cleric / Brute setups) + Raging Spirits + Spectres
Build Overview
Cold Minion Lich is a minion-driven Witch / Lich build. Your minions deal every point of damage all game long; your job is to:
- Summon and maintain the crew: different stages use different skeletons (Sniper → Arsonist → permanent Spectres + Wolf Pack).
- Cast Curses and Offerings to amplify minion damage: Elemental Weakness / Despair / Pain Offering.
- Survive on Energy Shield + Block late game: the Lich's Eternal Life grants poison/bleed immunity while ES is up, and Soulless Form + Heavy Buffer reduce damage taken through ES by 15%.
The gameplay loop has two phases:
| Phase | Minion core | Trigger chain |
|---|---|---|
| Campaign (Acts 1–4) | Skeletal Sniper + Volcano-summoned Raging Spirits + temporary Unearth corpse minions | Volcano ignites → Sniper gas-arrow explosions → Frost Bomb shreds res → Pain Offering amps |
| Endgame | Permanent Spectres (Gelid Zealots + Gargantuan Wasp) + Wolf Pack | Despair / Sigil of Power pre-buff → Spectres auto-attack → Skeletal Brute applies Intimidate |
Author's note: total damage is lower than the "Minion Army" or "Lightning Minion" routes, but the visual clarity beats the lightning archetype and there are no mandatory uniques — a great league starter.
Skills In Depth
Leveling (Act 1)
- Volcano (main clear + ignite source) — with Arcane Surge to calm early mana anxiety.
- Skeletal Sniper (core minion) — with Cut Multishot I.
- Contagion (temporary chaos DoT AoE).
- Frost Bomb (elemental Exposure on packs/elites/bosses).
- Unearth (cast on corpses to raise temporary bone constructs).
Early mana is tight: link Efficiency I to Elemental Weakness, and to Pain Offering as needed.
Mapping (Act 3 → Early Endgame)
- Raging Spirits (must be right-click activated in the skill panel) — summoned by Volcano / Elemental Weakness.
- Skeletal Arsonist (optional Sniper replacement; needs the Enfolding Dawn unique and at least 6 Arsonists to be worth it).
- Skeletal Storm Mage — applies Shock.
- Skeletal Cleric — heals/buffs minions (unlocks in the Act 4 interlude).
- Wolf Pack — frontline tank summons (Druid page).
Bossing (Single Target / Endgame)
- Bind Spectre → Gelid Zealots (main permanent damage; pick the ranged cold version that casts Eye of Winter — never the melee one!).
- Bind Spectre → Gargantuan Wasp (replaces Raging Spirits after level 80).
- Bind Spectre → Vaal Guard Bomber (the 50-Spirit version, neither melee nor ranged; may cost you framerate).
- Skeletal Brute (enabled after three Grand Spectrums; active Command applies Intimidate).
- Despair (replaces Elemental Weakness once the Evergrasping Ring is on).
- Sigil of Power (second weapon set, pre-buff for boss fights / Simulacrum waves).
- Convalescence (emergency defensive — cast when ES bottoms out).
Auras / Buffs (Reservation)
- Pain Offering (sacrifices a minion; your main damage buff). At endgame swap Meat Shield II for Brutus' Brain and Elemental Army for Prolonged Duration II.
- Sigil of Power (manually pre-placed for bosses / Simulacrum only).
Skill Rotation
Act 1 (after step 3)
- Volcano → summons 2 Raging Spirits + ignites.
- Command the Sniper's gas arrow (the burning ground detonates it).
- Volcano again → 2 more Spirits.
- Frost Bomb on elites/bosses.
- Unearth corpses for extra minions.
Act 3 → early endgame
- Elemental Weakness (keep it up; it also summons Spirits).
- Frost Bomb to shred resistance.
- Command the Snipers to attack.
- Pain Offering for damage (bosses/elites).
- Unearth for corpse minions.
Mid / late endgame
- (Pre-boss) swap weapon sets; pre-buff with Sigil of Power + Despair.
- Pain Offering for the damage buff.
- Despair as the standing curse.
- Skeletal Brute Command for Intimidate (late game).
- Convalescence the instant ES bottoms out.
Ascendancy (Lich)
Take the points in order:
- Soulless Form — 10% of damage bypasses ES and hits life directly; also neutralizes the mana degen that Necromantic Conduit will introduce.
- Necromantic Conduit — grants nearby minions Unholy Might (30% of all damage gained as extra chaos). Cost: you lose 5% of maximum mana per second, and you must stand near your minions (4m base radius, extendable via Profane Commander).
- Eternal Life — immune to poison and bleed while you have ES; synergizes with Soulless Form / Heavy Buffer. Cost: you cannot recover life while it's active (Mask of the Stitched Demon can temporarily disable ES for healing).
- Crystalline Phylactery — an extra jewel socket with +100% jewel effect.

| Romira's Requital | Ring | Endgame Wolf Pack support (replaces Loyalty) |
| Mask of the Stitched Demon | Helmet | Utility: temporarily disables ES in town to heal (works around Eternal Life's no-life-recovery clause) |

Mana Sustain
Early (Acts 1–2):
- Volcano linked with Arcane Surge for the mana drought.
- Elemental Weakness with Efficiency I (mandatory).
- Pain Offering with Efficiency I as needed.
After Soulless Form:
- Your first ascendancy = mana problems solved permanently (Soulless Form offsets Necromantic Conduit's 5% max-mana drain).
Mid-game passive:
- Take Open Mind to further cushion the 5% max-mana drain.
Warning: Necromantic Conduit's mana penalty is the price of Unholy Might — you must take it. Balance it out with Soulless Form + Open Mind.
Tips & Tricks
- Raging Spirits activation: right-click the Raging Spirits icon in the skill panel or Volcano won't summon any.
- Rattling Sceptre's Skeletal Warriors: the first two are free — never spend Spirit on more (terrible value).
- Vaal Guard Spectre selection: three share the name (melee 50, ranged 60, Bomber 50) — only the Bomber. You can "disenchant" a spectre gem at the NPC back into a clean Bind Spectre, keeping level/sockets.
- Vaal Guard performance warning: strong but laggy; if your PC struggles, stay on Skeletal Arsonists.
- Necromantic Conduit range: 4m base — stay near your minions; extend it with Profane Commander.
- Which Gelid Zealot: there's a melee and a ranged one — take the ranged cold version that casts Eye of Winter.
- Sigil of Power usage: second weapon set, pre-buff only — manually place it before boss fights / Simulacrum waves and build power with mana.
- Eternal Life blocks healing: equip Mask of the Stitched Demon to temporarily disable ES and heal up in town.
- Elemental Weakness at level 19: summons 2 Raging Spirits on its own — Volcano becomes optional at that point.
- Attribute respecs: the Hooded One or Doryani reset attributes for gold — adjust freely as gear/skills change.
Summary
Cold Minion Lich is a summoner with crisp visuals, zero mandatory uniques, and a seamless campaign-to-endgame arc.
- Strengths: no required uniques; a visually varied minion zoo; multiple ES defensive layers.
- Weaknesses: raw damage trails Minion Army / Lightning Minion; the campaign demands active rotation management (slightly busier pacing).
- The core: the three ascendancy picks Soulless Form → Necromantic Conduit → Eternal Life close the loop between ES defense and Unholy Might damage; endgame rests on three permanent Spectre types (Gelid Zealot + Gargantuan Wasp + Wolf Pack) with the Despair / Pain Offering double buff.
- Key advice: Necromantic Conduit is mandatory, but Soulless Form must come first; pair Eternal Life with Mask of the Stitched Demon to solve the healing problem.
