Oil Grenade Witchhunter — Full Guide (0.5.4)
Source: maxroll.gg/poe2/build-guides/oil-grenade-witchhunter-build-guide Version: Path of Exile 2 — 0.5.4 (Return of the Ancients) Class: Mercenary → Witchhunter | Main skills: Oil Grenade Author: Crouching_Tuna (PoE Franchise Director)
Build Overview
This is a beginner-friendly league starter built around Grenades as its core combat mechanic. You lob Oil Grenade as your main clearing projectile — white and blue packs go up in chain-reaction Ignite explosions — then swap to Explosive Grenade and Cluster Grenade for delayed, high-impact burst against tough rares and elites.
Defensively, the build stacks Evasion as its backbone. The ascendancy notable Obsessive Rituals converts 50% of your lost Armour/Evasion into Sorcery Ward — a barrier layer that absorbs physical, chaos, and elemental damage alike. Add the Queen of the Forest body armour, which converts Evasion Rating into movement speed, and you get a playstyle that is fast, tanky, and constantly blowing things up.
Core gameplay loop:
- Toss Oil Grenades on the move, triggering the Zealous Inquisition ascendancy plus Herald of Ash for screen-wide Ignite chains;
- Against tough rares/elites: War Banner → Rapid Shot to build 15 Heat → Explosive Grenade consumes the Heat for a +50% Fire burst;
- Flash Grenade doubles as mobility/crowd control/Armour Break (generating Endurance Charges with The Molten One's Gift);
- Frost Bomb applies elemental Exposure to bosses and rares.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Very fast map clear
- Extremely budget-friendly (you can hit your first gear milestone on near-white items)
- Simple, clear leveling path
- Solid damage from early campaign onward, very forgiving
- Extremely tanky in the endgame (Sorcery Ward + Evasion double-layered)
- Excels in dense-pack content like Abyss and Breach
Cons
- Limited endgame damage ceiling — top-tier Pinnacle Bosses are a grind
- Heavily cooldown-dependent (the usual grenade-build problem)
- Gear-hungry (high-tier Evasion bases + matching ring affixes)
- Fire ground effects can cause visual lag in crowded fights
- Grenade fuse delay feels clunky early on
- Boss fights require juggling multiple buttons (banner/shot/grenade/bomb)
Skill Breakdown
Leveling (Acts 1-2)
- Gas Grenade: your main skill early on, retired once Oil Grenade unlocks in Act 3
- Scavenged Plating: early defensive buff; swap to Wind Dancer once you're wearing Evasion gear
- Keep upgrading your Crossbow — plain white/blue items are fine, and town vendors can fill any gaps
Mapping
- Oil Grenade: main clear — triggers Ignite, and Zealous Inquisition into Herald of Ash detonates the whole screen
- Explosive Grenade: finisher for rares and small clumps
- Flash Grenade: escape / repositioning / Armour Break
Bossing (single target)
- War Banner: buff up — 25% more damage while you have Glory
- Rapid Shot: builds Heat (15 threshold)
- Explosive Grenade: consumes 15 Heat to trigger the 50% physical-converted-to-Fire buff
- Cluster Grenade: filler while Explosive Grenade is on cooldown
- Flash Grenade: stance break + Armour Break for Endurance Charges
- Frost Bomb: applies Cold Exposure (resistance reduction) to bosses/rares
- Crossbow Shot: emergency basic attack when you run out of Mana
Auras / Buffs
- Herald of Ash (default): kill-triggered fire spread, pairs beautifully with Zealous Inquisition
- Attrition (optional): swap in for HoA on hard bosses for aura-based damage reduction
- War Banner: keep it up permanently during boss fights
Skill Rotations
Mapping rotation:
- See a pack, throw Oil Grenade (clears whites and blues)
- See a rare, switch to Explosive Grenade
- In danger? Flash Grenade and get out
Boss rotation:
- War Banner for the buff (builds Glory)
- Rapid Shot until you hit 15 Heat
- Explosive Grenade consumes the Heat for +50% Fire
- Explosive Grenade on cooldown? Fill with Cluster Grenade
- Flash Grenade for stance break + Armour Break + Endurance Charges
- Frost Bomb to keep Exposure on the boss
Ascendancy (Witchhunter)
Take the nodes in this order (one respec needed later):
- Zealous Inquisition — kill-triggered buff that powers the Herald of Ash screen-wide explosions; your clearing cornerstone
- Pitiless Killer — assassinate bonus against recently-killed-adjacent enemies, guaranteeing Oil Grenade pops the first target
- Judge, Jury, and Executioner (temporary) — early damage; respec out as soon as you have high-Evasion gear
- Obsessive Rituals (replaces #3) — converts 50% of lost Armour/Evasion into Sorcery Ward, your endgame survival core
- Ceremonial Ablution — amplifies Sorcery Ward alongside Obsessive Rituals
Timing note: Only take Obsessive Rituals and Ceremonial Ablution together, after completing your final ascendancy trial and owning high-Evasion gear. Taking them early actively shrinks your defenses.
Passive Tree
Pathing Priorities / Key Notables
| Notable | What it does |

| Sand in the Eyes | Blinded enemies get -20% accuracy — effectively multiplies your Evasion by 1.2 |
| Charge Regulation | Spend an Endurance Charge for 20% more Evasion Rating |
| Wind Dancer | +10% Evasion per stage (up to 3 stages) |
| The Molten One's Gift | Armour Break passive bonus; once taken, link Armour Break II + Armour Demolisher II to Flash Grenade |
| Obsessive Rituals (ascendancy synergy) | 50% of lost Armour/Evasion converted to Sorcery Ward |
| Ceremonial Ablution | Raises the Sorcery Ward cap |

Gearing Strategy
Campaign
- Replace your crossbow every few zones — affixes just need to be "good enough"; vendor, craft, or trade
- Rings: prioritize Iron Ring (the value king of Act 1)
- Gloves: prioritize Added #-# Damage to Attacks
- Upgrade your life/mana flasks once per act
- Use Artificer's Orbs on crossbow and armour; socket Lesser Desert / Storm / Glacial runes
- Save a Lesser Iron Rune for a +1 Grenade base — the Bombard Crossbow
Early Mapping
- Stay on armour/evasion hybrid bases
- Cap elemental resistances at 75%, get chaos close to 75%
- Stack Life on every slot
- Start shopping for pure Evasion bases (to transition into Queen of the Forest)
Endgame
- Switch everything to pure Evasion bases
- Equip Queen of the Forest at level 51 (upgrade your other slots first, or the tradeoff backfires)
- Helmet: Decree of Acuity (cheap 20% Blind amplification + corruptible for Spirit)
- Weapon rune slot: Farrul's Rune of the Hunt
- Glove rune slot: The Greatwolf's Rune of Claws
- Boots: drop the movement speed affix (QoF already covers speed) — go all-in on Evasion + resistances
- Rings: fire/all-elemental damage + resistances (Xoph's Catalyst for 20% quality)
- Add Deflection affixes for extra damage reduction
Aspirational
- Upgrade the belt to Headhunter (mapping bliss)
- Or Mageblood + Legacy of Stibnite + Jade Flask (Sorcery Ward goes through the roof)
- All-T1-affix rares
- Heart of the Well jewels
Key Uniques at a Glance
| Unique | Slot | Role |
|---|---|---|

| Decree of Acuity | Helmet | 20% Blind-synergy Evasion amplification; corrupt for Spirit |
| Headhunter | Belt | Best-in-slot endgame mapping |
| Mageblood | Belt | Flask synergy, massive Sorcery Ward numbers |
| Bombard Crossbow | Weapon | +1 Grenade Level, dominant early |
| Changeling Talisman | Weapon swap | Endgame speed tech (Pounce mobility) |
| Rite of Passage of the Boar | Charm | 20% damage reduction + 20% physical converted to Fire |
Mana Sustain
The problem: rising gem levels push Mana costs high enough to choke both mapping and boss fights.
Solutions:
Mana Gained on Kill (mapping sustain)
- Roll it as a crossbow suffix or on rare jewels
- Every kill refunds a chunk directly
Mana Leech (boss sustain)
- Link it to Flash Grenade as a support gem
- Instant mana back on hit
Lavianga's Spirits Flask (reliable sustain)
- Flat Mana Regen with sustained uptime (great for boss fights with no adds to kill)
- Unlocks the Crystal Elixir damage passive
Mana Cost Efficiency (endgame optimization)
- Jewel affix that reduces skill Mana costs
Playstyle Tips
- Campaign gear: use the author's Loot Filter to spot usable bases, and check town vendors every level-up
- Keep the crossbow fresh: all your damage scales off crossbow affix tiers — replace it relentlessly
- Heat management: in boss fights, watch the Rapid Shot Heat bar like a hawk — always detonate Explosive Grenade at full Heat for the free +50% Fire
- Armour Break combo: after taking The Molten One's Gift, link Armour Break II + Armour Demolisher II to Flash Grenade for reliable Endurance Charges, fueling Charge Regulation's 18% defensive bonus
- Cluster Bombs feels bad early? Just unspec it and re-take it in endgame once Short Fuse II is online
- Sorcery Ward transition timing: take Obsessive Rituals + Ceremonial Ablution together, and only after acquiring high-Evasion bases — otherwise it's a net loss
- The Evasion loop: in endgame, prioritize Evasion bases over raw life; Evasion simultaneously gives you speed (QoF), dodge, and tankiness (Sorcery Ward + Blind)
- Attribute management: respec at the Hooded One / Doryani; vendor white items for gold
- Ring resonance: match flat elemental damage to your ring affix types, and use Xoph's Catalyst for 20% quality on fire/all-elemental affixes
- Boss-specific: swap Herald of Ash for Attrition on hard bosses
- Weapon swap: in endgame, keep a Changeling Talisman in your swap and use Pounce to speed through maps
