Frostbolt CoC Comet Oracle — Full Guide (0.5.4)
Source: maxroll.gg/poe2/build-guides/frostbolt-cast-on-crit-comet-oracle Version: Path of Exile 2 — 0.5.4 Class: Druid → Oracle | Main skills: Frostbolt (Cast on Critical → Comet)
Build Overview
This build is centered on Frostbolt, using the unique ring Snakepit to convert Frostbolt's Pierce behavior into Fork, so your projectiles split on hit and chain-trigger explosions. Every explosion is another chance to crit, which reliably feeds energy into Cast on Critical and triggers Comet to crash down for massive area damage.
Snakepit must be worn in the left ring slot — it is the core of the entire build.
Core loop:
- Frostbolt hits an enemy → Snakepit triggers Fork → multiple projectiles keep weaving through the pack.
- Frostbolt + Frost Wall: detonating the wall's ice crystals produces a burst of crits.
- Every crit feeds energy into the Cast on Critical meta gem.
- At full energy → Comet slams down, and Living Bomb remnants amplify the damage again.
- At high investment, an Absent Amulet (Cast on Critical implicit) lets you run two CoC setups at once, staggering Comets across the screen.
Before you get Snakepit, level with Ice Nova / Frost Darts powered by Cold Infusion Remnants.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Screen-wide freeze control, extremely clean clear
- High single-target burst (Comet to the face)
- Smooth, highly automated gameplay once Snakepit is online
- Energy Shield route has excellent late-game sustain (chaos + bleed immunity after CI)
- Main skill is swappable (Spark / Ice Nova both work)
Cons
- Frostbolt isn't usable early in the Campaign — you need Snakepit
- The entire Campaign depends on Cold Infusion Remnants for damage
- Heavy Mana costs, especially on bosses
- Extremely reliant on a key Unique (Snakepit is mandatory)
- Late-game passive tree is complex and needs jewel synergies
Skills Breakdown
Leveling (Acts 1-5)
| Skill | Role |
|---|---|
| Ice Nova | Main clear skill — must be empowered with Cold Infusion, or it only deals 1/3 damage |
| Frost Darts | Single-target damage, consumes Cold Infusion for the explosion |
| Frost Bomb | Generates Cold Infusion Remnants + Elemental Exposure |
| Frost Wall | Blocks enemies + creates ice crystals that Snap / Ice Nova can detonate |
| Snap | Detonates frozen enemies, automatically generating Cold Infusion |
| Early utility skills | Shred, Volcano (once you reach Clearfell Encampment) |
| Backup | Attuned Wand + Mana Drain in your weapon swap for mana emergencies |
Key reminder: casting Ice Nova / Frost Darts without Cold Infusion deals only 1/3 damage. Always pick up remnants first.
Mapping
Early maps (before Snakepit / on a budget)
- Main clear: Ice Nova + Cold Infusion + Snap detonations
- Single target: Cast on Critical + Comet + Living Bomb (unlocked at level 58)
Once Snakepit is on
| Skill | Role |
|---|---|
| Frostbolt (main) | Practically the only button you press — silky-smooth clear |
| Frost Wall | Occasional cast to block rares / chain single-target explosions |
Bossing
| Step | Action |
|---|---|
| 1 | Elemental Weakness to lower resistances |
| 2 | Frost Bomb to apply Elemental Exposure |
| 3 | Drop a Frost Wall right on top of the boss |
| 4 | Frostbolt to detonate the ice crystals |
| 5 | CoC auto-triggers Comet onto the boss |
CoC setups (Snakepit + CoC):
- Setup 1: Cast on Critical + Comet + Living Bomb (Living Bomb automatically drops Fire Remnants after Comet lands, doubling Comet's damage)
- Setup 2 (high investment, requires Absent Amulet): Cast on Critical + Comet + Boundless Energy II (staggers the two Comet setups for continuous output)
Auras / Buffs
| Skill | Role |
|---|---|
| Sigil of Power | Damage boost while standing in the area (requires a Chiming Staff) |
| Elemental Weakness | Mandatory resistance reduction for single-target fights |
| Blink | Premium mobility — near-zero cooldown when paired with Temporalis |
Skill Rotation
Campaign clear loop: Frost Bomb to generate Infusion → Ice Nova to detonate crystals → Snap to execute frozen mobs → Frost Wall for positioning.
Endgame clear loop: hold down Frostbolt — Snakepit forks + wall detonations, CoC auto-drops Comets.
Endgame single-target loop: Elemental Weakness → Frost Bomb → Frost Wall on the boss → Frostbolt to detonate crystals → both CoC Comets landing in staggered waves.
Ascendancy (Oracle)
Take the nodes in this order:
- The Unseen Path — reveals hidden passive nodes only Oracles can see; the gateway to later Keystones.
- Forced Outcome — all hits are treated as critical hits, but with reduced crit damage. Stack 30-40% crit chance to maximize the value.
- (The third node follows your build's direction — keep strengthening crit / casting / defense.)
- Entwined Realities — lets you allocate nodes around Keystones without pathing to them; combined with Time-Lost Sapphire + Heroic Tragedy this is the key to late-game scaling.
Passive Tree
Allocation Priority
Campaign: prioritize attribute nodes (meet gear/gem Str/Dex/Int requirements) + Intelligence for life and mana.
Early maps: add hybrid life/energy shield nodes (e.g. Patient Barrier, +% Max ES).
Mid-to-late game: pivot to the Energy Shield route — Illuminated Crown, Convalescence (faster ES recovery) + Frozen Limit / Infused Limits (raise your Cold Infusion stack cap).
Key Notables
| Notable | Effect |
|---|---|
| Patient Barrier | +% Max ES, your early ES starting point |
| Illuminated Crown | +Max ES + faster start of ES recharge |
| Convalescence | +ES recharge rate + faster start of recharge |
| Frozen Limit | Raises Cold Infusion stack cap |
| Infused Limits | Raises Cold Infusion stack cap |
| Natural Energies | +40% Max ES (via Heroic Tragedy transformation) |
| Corrupted Vision | +30% spell crit (via Heroic Tragedy transformation) |
| Steel Bastion | +40% elemental damage (via Heroic Tragedy transformation) |
Keystones (allocated through Entwined Realities, no pathing needed)
- Chaos Inoculation — switch once you hit 5000-6000+ ES; grants chaos damage and bleed immunity, converts life to ES.
- Blackflame Covenant — taken purely to reach the surrounding notables; the Keystone's own effect can be ignored.
Jewel Routing
- Time-Lost Sapphire — the late-game core. Desecrate for mods like +crit damage, +radius, +3% Mana Cost Efficiency per notable; socket it in a node-dense area and grab the nodes directly through Entwined Realities.
- Heroic Tragedy — transforms nearby Notables into stronger variants (Natural Energies / Corrupted Vision / Steel Bastion). Buy several different "Remembrancing # Songworthy Deeds" jewels and roll-test them. Variant priority: Medved > Vorana > avoid Olroth (it removes +Max Mana from Int). Only use it when it can hit 4+ useful Notables.
Stat Priorities
Offense
| Priority | Stat | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | +Cold Spell Skill Levels / +All Spell Skill Levels | Your main damage multiplier — scales exponentially per level; wanted on weapon, amulet, and some armour pieces |
| 2 | Crit Chance | Forced Outcome wants 30-40%; the key to triggering CoC |
| 3 | Crit Multiplier | Push toward 500%+ at high investment; craftable on Time-Lost Sapphire |
| 4 | Cast Speed | Faster casts = more crits = more frequent CoC triggers |
| 5 | Cold / Elemental Damage | Tertiary scaling from passives + gear |
Defense
| Stage | Focus |
|---|---|
| Campaign | 1000+ Max Life, all resistances at 75%, Armour |
| Early Maps | Hybrid life + ES (aim for 1500-2000 life + 1000-2000 ES), % ES Recharge |
| Mid Maps | Switch to Chaos Inoculation at 5000-6000 ES |
| Endgame | Pure ES (target 8000-15000+), % ES Recharge Rate, Faster Start of ES Recharge |
Key Stat Targets
| Stage | Max Life | Max ES | Crit Chance | Crit Multi | Cast Speed |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Campaign | 1000+ | 200-500 | 30-50% | 150-200% | 1.0-1.5 |
| Early Maps | 1500-2000 | 1000-2000 | 40-60% | 200-300% | 1.5-2.0 |
| Mid Maps | 2000+ (pre-CI) | 5000-6000 | 50-70% | 300-400% | 2.0+ |
| Endgame | 0 (CI) | 8000-15000+ | 70%+ | 500%+ | 2.5+ |
Gearing Strategy
Campaign
| Slot | Priority Affixes |
|---|---|
| Weapon | +Cold Spell Levels / +All Spell Levels (Wand / Focus / Staff) |
| Body Armour | +Max Life; pick up ES where convenient |
| Boots | +% Movement Speed |
| Rings/Amulet | +Cast Speed, life, resistances |
| Weapon Swap | Talisman (enables the Pounce movement skill) |
Early Mapping
| Slot | Priority Affixes |
|---|---|
| Weapon | Keep stacking Spell Levels; consider a Chiming Staff (enables Sigil of Power) |
| Body Armour | ES + % Increased ES Recharge; start with +30 Spirit |
| Helmet/Gloves/Boots | Increased ES Recharge Rate (your core defensive mechanic) |
| Ring (left) | Snakepit — mandatory |
| Ring (right) | Life, resistances, Cast Speed |
| Amulet | Cast Speed, +Cold Spell Levels |
| Overall | Stay hybrid life + ES until you reach the 5000-6000 ES threshold |
Endgame
| Slot | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Weapon | Corrupted Runeseeker's Call, 6 runes + Legacy of Lifesprig socket (+9 All Spell Levels, huge Blink CD reduction — arguably the "best weapon in the game" for this build) |
| Amulet | Absent Amulet (CoC implicit) — unlocks the second CoC setup; stack +Spirit, +2 All Spell Levels, Cast Speed |
| Ring (left) | Snakepit (anoint Split Shot) |
| Ring (right) | % Increased Mana Cost Efficiency (offsets the extreme mana costs) |
| Body Armour | Max ES + % ES Recharge + +Spirit |
| Boots | ES + % ES Recharge + Movement Speed + 15 Spirit |
| Helmet | Raven-Touched Shard slot → anoint Zarokh's Gift (+1 Jewel Socket) |
| Belt (chase) | Mageblood or Headhunter |
| Accessory (chase) | Temporalis — up to 2s/2.4s cooldown reduction on all skills; blazing-fast Blink |
| Jewels | Time-Lost Sapphire (multiple), Heroic Tragedy |
| Optional | Rakiata's Flow (map clear only, reduces boss resistances) |
Expanding your Spirit pool: +50 Spirit amulet, +15 Spirit boots, the Profane Commander Keystone, Dialla's Desire on Blink, Uhtred's Boon (Expedition 10 Runes, permanent +10 Spirit).
Ward synergy: run at least one Runeforged piece (gloves preferred) with 100+ Ward to support the Explosive Transmutation and Siphon Elements + Remnants of Kalguur combos.
Mana Sustain
| Stage | Solution |
|---|---|
| Campaign | Your Mana Flask is your lifeline — the "+% Amount Recovered" suffix is mandatory; in a mana crisis, swap to Attuned Wand + Mana Drain in the weapon swap |
| Early Maps | Two jewels with "Recover 2% Max Mana on Kill" refill you automatically while clearing; stack +% Mana Regen and +Max Mana on passives |
| Boss fights | Layer everything: +% Flask Mana Recovery Rate, Mana Regen, a big Max Mana pool (Intelligence) |
| Maps (once Mana Remnants unlock) | "Mana Remnants basically solve mapping mana entirely" — no extra gear investment needed |
| Very high damage (high spell levels) | % Increased Mana Cost Efficiency ring + Time-Lost Sapphire "Notables in Radius also grant 3% Mana Cost Efficiency" (desecrate craft) — stack multiple notables into an effective cost reduction |
Key warning: do not blindly stack spell levels without Mana Cost Efficiency — you will run yourself dry instantly.
Gameplay Tips
Defense & Survival
- Frost Wall is also a defensive tool! Drop it constantly — it blocks, freezes, and deals damage all at once.
- Campaign Acts 1-3: life first, resistances second.
- ES Recharge Rate matters more than raw ES total — prioritize "Faster Start of ES Recharge" and "% ES Recharge Rate".
Infusion Remnants (Campaign-critical)
- Frost Bomb drops remnants on the ground (auto-pickup).
- Snap executes frozen mobs and generates remnants.
- Siphon Elements also generates remnants when you freeze enemies during its buff.
- You can hold up to 3 stacks; the Frozen Limit + Infused Limits passives raise the cap.
- Nearly every Ice Nova / Frost Darts cast should be infused — otherwise you eat the 3x damage penalty.
CoC Triggering (Mapping stage)
- Crit energy generation: Normal = 1, Magic = 2, Rare = 5, Unique = 20.
- Comet trigger threshold: 300 energy per cast.
- "Why do my crits not produce Comets?" → Too few normal mobs; you need to freeze several enemies to build enough energy.
- Frost Wall + Frostbolt fork chain reactions = tons of crits = high-density Comets.
Snakepit Ring Notes
- Left ring slot only (the right slot behaves differently).
- Once equipped, Frostbolt can no longer Pierce (unless you remove that mod with a Vaal Cultivation Orb).
- It looks like piercing, but it's actually "fork + explosion".
- Test the mechanic against a Frost Wall in your Hideout to confirm it's working.
Chaos Inoculation Switch
- Allocate CI at 5000-6000 ES.
- After switching: ignore all life and chaos resistance mods → those freed-up affix slots all go into damage.
- CI also grants bleed immunity — outstanding against bleed-heavy mobs.
Advanced Play
- Double CoC (Absent Amulet): Setup 1 = Comet + Living Bomb; Setup 2 = Comet + Boundless Energy II. The two setups fire in staggered waves — continuous output instead of burst windows.
- Temporalis + Blink: requires combined investment in cooldown reduction, crit, and cast speed, but rewards you with near-instant teleports.
- Swapping the main skill: at very high investment you can drop Snakepit and run Spark + Powered by Verisium infusion instead.
Rarity Farming
- Stacking ~100% Increased Rarity late game noticeably improves drops and makes long farming sessions far more sustainable.
Summary
| Stage | Key Milestone |
|---|---|
| Acts 1-3 | Ice Nova + Cold Infusion system, Frost Darts for single target |
| Acts 4-5 | Add CoC + Comet for single target, prepare the transition |
| Early Maps | Get Snakepit → switch to the Frostbolt playstyle |
| Mid Maps | Stack ES to 5000-6000 → allocate Chaos Inoculation |
| Late Game | Double CoC + Time-Lost Sapphire jewel maxing + optional Temporalis/Spark variants |
The soul of this build is the Snakepit + Cast on Critical + Comet trigger chain. The early game is essentially a "setup phase" — the moment the core unique comes online, the build transforms completely. Prioritize getting Snakepit; everything else is just steadily stacking ES and spell levels for a smooth ride to endgame.
