Supporting Fire Tactician — Full Guide (0.5.4)
Source: maxroll.gg/poe2/build-guides/supporting-fire-tactician-build-guide Version: Path of Exile 2 — 0.5.4 (updated 2026-06-25, Return of the Ancients league) Class: Mercenary → Tactician | Main skills: Supporting Fire Author: Shayd (YouTube @shaydpoe)
1. Build Overview
Supporting Fire Tactician is a minions + area arrow-rain hybrid archetype. The core mechanic is Supporting Fire, a skill with a massive 14-meter base radius that commands every minion around you to unleash a volley of arrows at the target location. In the guide's own words: "Have you ever wanted to have an endless rain of arrows surround your presence, killing monsters before you even get a chance to see them?"
The gameplay revolves around stacking the Muster node (each living minion grants you extra damage): raise a squad of 5–6 different skeleton types that serve as both Supporting Fire's damage multiplier and your meat shields. Strength is the core attribute: early on it feeds life, and later — through Heroic Tragedy + Chaos Inoculation — every point of Strength converts into Energy Shield, giving you offense + defense double-scaling from a single attribute.
The experience: one-button gameplay, blistering clear speed, stacked defensive layers, and a rock-bottom starting cost — officially billed as an "excellent league starter and viable endgame strategy".
2. Pros & Cons
Pros:
- One-button playstyle, minimal piloting stress
- Phenomenal clear speed
- Excellent defensive scaling (Strength → life/shield)
- Amazing league starter
- Offense + defense share one attribute — low gear affix pressure
Cons:
- Gear needs minion affixes (the "Minion Tax on Gear")
- Heavy suffix pressure late game (resistances/attributes compete for slots)
- You have to play crossbows early on
3. Skills Breakdown
1) Leveling — Crossbow Phase (levels 1 → 36)
Main clear: Permafrost Bolts — freezes trash Single target: Fragmentation Rounds — detonates frozen bosses Utility:
- Frost Bomb — lowers enemy elemental resistance
- Herald of Ice — improves clear
- Freezing Mark — boosts boss damage
Weapon set setup:
- Weapon Set I → Permafrost Bolts (freeze)
- Weapon Set II → Fragmentation Rounds (detonate)
- Right-click the weapon slot icon to assign one crossbow to both Weapon Sets; bind Crossbow Shot I / II to separate keys
Supporting Fire unlocks mid-Act 2 — feel free to try it early, but crossbows remain your main clear until the level 36 respec.
2) Mapping — Level 36 Transition + Red Maps
Level 36 transition skill setup
- Main clear/single target: Supporting Fire (use on cooldown as much as possible)
- Minion army (one of each, Snipers excepted):
- Skeletal Sniper ×2-3 (bonus single-target; its Gas Arrow gets ignited by Supporting Fire + Fire Attunement)
- Wolf Pack (clear + ignites bosses)
- Skeletal Reaver (feeds Muster)
- Skeletal Storm Mage (shocks bosses)
- Skeletal Cleric (keeps the squad alive)
- Command Skill: Skeletal Arsonist (no-cooldown detonations — triggers Archon of Undeath and stacks Puppet Master)
- Debuffs: Elemental Weakness, Frost Bomb
- Auras (sceptre): Upwelling II, Clarity II
Supporting Fire's support gems (the mandatory four):
- Fire Attunement (auto-ignites Gas Clouds)
- Multishot II
- Bidding II or III (II leans single-target, III leans clear)
- Muster (the damage core — the build doesn't work without it)
Red map skill setup
- Clear + single target: Supporting Fire (Archon of Undeath enables back-to-back casts — stacking layers melts bosses)
- Keep 1 Skeletal Sniper purely for the Muster bonus; other minions as above
- Temporal Chains + Blasphemy = area slow
- Withering Presence = boosts Chaos damage
- Pounce = leap + Predator's Mark (enemies take +60% damage) + Cold Exposure
- After the sceptre upgrade, add Despair (once Whispers of Doom unlocks, run it alongside Temporal Chains)
- Link Wolf Pack with Infernal Legion I + Essence Harvest — massive mana recovery
3) Bossing Rotation
Early bosses:
- Open with Elemental Weakness + Frost Bomb
- Keep the debuffs up all fight
- Supporting Fire for continuous damage
- Fire the Skeletal Sniper Command Skill as often as possible
- Gas Clouds get auto-ignited by Supporting Fire / Wolf Pack via Fire Attunement
Red map / endgame bosses:
- Pounce → apply Predator's Mark + trigger Cold Exposure (replaces Frost Bomb + Elemental Weakness)
- Keep those debuffs up all fight
- Spam the Skeletal Arsonist Command until Archon of Undeath triggers
- Critical timing: Archon must be active BEFORE you cast Supporting Fire! (Original: "It is important that you do this BEFORE casting Supporting Fire. Its cooldown does not retroactively update if it is on cooldown while you gain Archon of Undeath.")
- Keep pressing Supporting Fire — the stacking layers = explosive damage
4) Auras / Buffs / Upkeep
| Type | Skill | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Aura | Upwelling II | Standard |
| Aura | Clarity II | Core mana recovery — always on |
| Persistent Buff | Blasphemy → Temporal Chains | Area slow |
| Persistent Buff | Withering Presence | Wither debuff, Chaos damage boost |
| Persistent Buff | Despair (late) | Requires Whispers of Doom |
| Weapon enchant | Once Kurgal's Leash is added | Supporting Fire gains Unholy Might (30% Extra Chaos) |
4. Ascendancy (Tactician) Order
Take them in this order — the first 4 ascendancies (8 points) are fixed:
- Unleash Hell! — enables Supporting Fire (the soul of the entire build)
- A Solid Plan — reduces the Spirit cost of Blasphemy and other Persistent Buffs
- Polish That Gear — ailment threshold; also the prerequisite for the next node
- Stay Light, Use Cover — extremely strong with Morior Invictus; damage reduction caps at 50% (you'll rarely max it), and late game it lets even modest Armour/Evasion values convert into real defense
(Nodes 5–8 continue along the same path.)
5. Key Passive Tree Notables
Leveling (levels 1–35)
- Rapid Reload — crossbow QoL
- Adrenaline Rush — speeds up the early acts
Level 36 respec MUST-HAVES
- Growing Swarm (the node that makes Supporting Fire feel right)
- Command Skill Cooldown
- Lord of Horrors (Muster + room for more minions)
- At your Command (squeezes maximum value from minions)
- Archon of Undeath (one of the strongest nodes in the game: Buff = 25% More Minion Damage + 200% More Cooldown Recovery Rate)
- Puppet Master (powerful stacking buff via Command Skills)
- Gigantic Following (feeds Supporting Fire 20% more damage)
Red map stage
- Resurging Archon — lets you drop Skeletal Snipers entirely
- Whispers of Doom — unlocks running Despair + Temporal Chains together
- Necrotic Touch / Grip of Evil — pairs with the Omen Sceptre's Malice
- Licking Wounds — improves life/mana recovery
Endgame
- Dominion — the biggest upgrade: near-100% uptime on Archon of Undeath, explosive single target
- Chaos Inoculation — with Heroic Tragedy (Black Scythe Training) to convert Strength into ES
- Giant's Blood — lets you wield Chober Chaber one-handed
- From Nothing (Wildsurge Incantation) — saves pathing points
- Controlled Metamorphosis (Medium-Small) — with Right Hand of Darkness
- Megalomaniac + Growing Swarm — mandatory for endgame pathing. Options: Subterfuge Mask / Polymathy / Captivating Companionship
- Careful Assassin (on the Weapon Set 2 points) — guarantees Pounce triggers Cold Exposure
Jewels
- Early/mid: "Minions Deal Increased Damage", "Minions have increased Critical Damage Bonus", "Minions have increased Critical Hit Chance" (2 of 3 is fine)
- Endgame: "Increased Maximum Energy Shield" + "Faster Start of Energy Shield Recharge" (both mandatory), plus the minion affixes above
6. Stat Priorities
Offense
| Stage | Priority |
|---|---|
| Leveling | Adds X to X Damage to Attacks (cold/phys), elemental res (to free up affix slots later) |
| Supporting Fire stage | + to Level of all Minion Skills (sceptre/helm/amulet), Strength, Command Skill cooldown recovery, Minion crit/crit damage, "Minions have Increased AoE", "Minions Deal Increased Damage with Command Skills" |
Defense
| Stage | Priority |
|---|---|
| Leveling | Maximum life, elemental res, movement speed (boots) |
| Early mapping | Life (from Strength), elemental res, Armour/Evasion |
| Endgame | Energy Shield (Strength converted via CI + Black Scythe Training), "Increased Maximum Energy Shield" (jewels), "Faster Start of ES Recharge", elemental res (via Morior Invictus), "Increased Global Armour/Evasion/ES" (via Perfect Essence of Enhancement) |
7. Gearing Strategy
Campaign
| Slot | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Crossbow | Grab a Varnished Crossbow at level 16 in Act 1; craft with Lesser Essence of Ice / Orb of Alchemy; socket a Glacial Rune |
| Rings | Buy Iron Rings from the Act 1 vendor (added attack damage) |
| Boots | Movement speed mandatory; check vendors for upgrades every 10 levels |
| Gloves/Rings/Crossbow | Prioritize "Adds X to X Damage" (cold/phys) |
| Helmet/Sceptre | Look for "+ to Level of all Minion Skills" (stockpile for later) |
| General | Maximum life, resistances; refresh Flasks every 10–15 levels |
Warning: the level 36 respec costs about 21,700 Gold. While leveling, do not gamble at vendors or buy expensive Rares.
Early Mapping (after the level 36 respec)
- Top priority: + to Level of all Minion Skills (gives minions both damage + life)
- The more Strength the better (minion damage + your Life)
- A Shrine Sceptre provides Purity of Fire, giving you Upwelling I + Clarity I for free
Unique priority:
- Enfolding Dawn (first target! Save Exalts during the Campaign and buy it outright. Runeforge it for big Armour + ES)
- Meginord's Girdle (huge Strength + cold res)
Red Maps
| Slot | Unique / Affixes |
|---|---|
| Sceptre | Trenchtimbre (switch once resistances allow; aim for +2); upgrade path: Omen Sceptre (Malice = huge single-target boost) |
| Amulet | Emergent Instinct (Supporting Fire always active = Regeneration always on) |
| Flask | Lavianga's Spirits (continuous mana recovery) |
| Weapon enchant | Kurgal's Leash (gives Supporting Fire 30% Damage as Extra Chaos) |
| Belt | "Minions have Increased AoE" (mandatory) + "Minions Deal Increased Damage with Command Skills" (mandatory) |
| Sceptre prefix | "Surpassing Chance to gain Puppet Master stack on Command Skill" (saves tree points) |
| Talisman for Pounce | Crit chance / attack speed / accuracy (mandatory) + Added Cold to Attacks prefix (any tier). Without the prefix, socket a Glacial Rune instead |
When to drop Enfolding Dawn: once your amulet/chest provide enough Spirit, switch to a mid-tier Spirit + defense chest.
Endgame
- Prioritize Energy Shield on helm/gloves/boots
- Chober Chaber (strictly better than Trenchtimbre; needs Giant's Blood; chase a +4 to Minion Skills double-corrupt / low-requirement 80–85 Int roll)
- Morior Invictus (template affixes):
- Mandatory: To All Elemental Resistances + To All Attributes
- Third pick: Hits against you have reduced Critical Damage Bonus (or Spirit / Global Defenses as substitutes)
- Only 4 sockets → cut Craiceann's Rune of Recovery
- Sceptre: "Maximum Stacks of Puppet Master" (damage + speed together)
- Raven-Touched Shard — lets the helmet Instill Gigantic Following
- Cadigan's Epiphany — lets gloves carry one extra endgame skill
Min-Max Ultimate
- Mageblood (Flask slots: Bismuth / Jade / Quicksilver, 4th pick Gold)
- Bismuth → resistances off gear → gear slots freed up for Intelligence
- Intelligence onto rings → rings can then carry Minion affixes (deep min-max)
- Chober Chaber with a "Reduced Attribute Requirements" double-corrupt
- Jiquani's Thesis — with Mageblood, pushes Energy Shield recovery to the limit
8. Mana Sustain
| Stage | Solution |
|---|---|
| Leveling/early | Clarity II always on as a Persistent Buff; Shrine Sceptre → Purity of Fire gives free Upwelling I + Clarity I |
| Red maps | Wolf Pack + Infernal Legion I (not II!) + Essence Harvest = your main mana source |
| Endgame | Same as above + the Lavianga's Spirits Flask |
FAQ warning: never link Last Gasp to Wolf Pack — it breaks Essence Harvest.
9. Gameplay Tips
Minion Management
- Keep only 1 of each minion type (Skeletal Sniper excepted: 2–3 early, down to 1 later)
- No need to invest in minion defenses: as the guide says, "you still get the damage boost from Muster even when they are dead"
- Minions are not your main damage source — Supporting Fire is
- Last Gasp / Tecrod's Revenge keep minions alive a little longer so they can apply Shock / Armour Break
Archon of Undeath Mechanics
- Buff: 25% More Minion Damage + 200% More Cooldown Recovery Rate (for Command Skills)
- The CDR lets you chain multiple Supporting Fire casts in boss fights, stacking layers
- After it expires, there's a 20-second recovery window — Resurging Archon + Rune of Renown help early; Dominion removes the recovery window entirely at endgame
Why respec at level 36?
- Supporting Fire gains its third support socket at level 36
- All the necessary CDR passive nodes become allocatable at the same time
Socket Progression
- Lv 36 → 3rd socket
- Lv 65 → 4th socket
- Lv 90 → 5th socket
Pounce Mechanics
- Predator's Mark: enemies take up to +60% damage
- Cold Exposure lowers elemental resistance
- Grants leap mobility (great for weaving between packs)
- Run it on Weapon Set 2 + Careful Assassin to guarantee the Cold Exposure trigger
10. Summary
Supporting Fire Tactician converts minion headcount directly into Supporting Fire damage multipliers through the Muster + Archon of Undeath mechanics; CI + Heroic Tragedy make Strength feed your ES at the same time, leaving your late-game defenses rock solid. You can start on 100 Exalted or less, with Chober Chaber + Morior Invictus as the value-endgame loadout. One button plus a screen-wide arrow storm — truly "kill before you see".
