Boneshatter Warbringer — Full Guide (0.5.4)
Source: maxroll.gg/poe2/build-guides/boneshatter-warbringer-leveling-guide Version: Path of Exile 2 — 0.5.4 (Return of the Ancients) Class: Warrior → Warbringer | Main skills: Boneshatter
Build Overview
This is a melee Slam archetype built around "hit monsters with a big stick until their bones shatter." The core loop is crystal clear:
- Leap Slam onto a pack to apply Primed (the pre-stun state — a glowing orb appears overhead).
- Immediately Boneshatter the Primed target for a screen-wide bone-explosion AoE clear.
- Bossing: pre-stack Earthshatter spikes where the boss will stand, then the instant it becomes targetable, detonate everything with Seismic Cry / Infernal Cry for an instant Heavy Stun.
- Once the boss is Heavy Stunned, weapon-swap (2H mace + shield → dual maces) and drop Hammer of the Gods as the finisher.
- Defense relies on Block and Armour; the ascendancy's key job is pushing your block cap to 75%.
Positioning: sturdy survival + huge AoE clear + enough single-target burst for mid-to-late bosses, and it runs fine with no specific uniques (later you can add The Surrender, Thrillsteel, Chernobog's Pillar and friends).
Skills In Depth
Leveling
- Early damage: level with any Slam / Mace skill — Sunder , Cleave , Ground Slam are the usual picks. Swap the moment you get Boneshatter.
- Link Brink + Overpower to Leap Slam from the start, and do NOT level the gem — a leveled Leap Slam kills the trash outright, which means nothing gets Primed.
- Also keep Infernal Cry and Seismic Cry unleveled (their mana costs get brutal).
Mapping
- Main clear: Boneshatter
- Movement + pre-stun: Leap Slam (low level + Brink + Overpower)
- Insurance vs rares: Infernal Cry into Boneshatter — Infernal Cry adds bonus damage to the target's explosion, guaranteeing the rare's death pops the whole screen.
- Extra clear: Forge Hammer leaves Molten Fissures that your warcries detonate.
Bossing
- Earthshatter : keep stacking spikes during the boss's intro animation; the moment it becomes hittable, detonate everything with a Cry for an instant Heavy Stun.
- Seismic Cry + Infernal Cry : detonate with both cries together for maximum impact.
- Hammer of the Gods: after the Heavy Stun, swap to the second weapon set (dual maces) and drop the hammer. No Glory generates during the animation — re-stack Earthshatter afterward to recharge.
- Perfect Strike: hold the button and release exactly when the weapon flashes red for the maximum crit multiplier — great filler damage.
- Shockwave Totem : supplementary single target; it also detonates Jagged Ground.
Auras / Buffs
- Herald of Ash : reserves 30 Spirit. Note: you must right-click to activate it in the skill gem UI — it shows 0/30 by default.
- Scavenged Plating: permanent armour from the Anvil's Weight ascendancy — always on, no upkeep.
Skill Rotation
Mapping loop:
Leap Slam → Dodge Roll → Boneshatter (hit the Primed pack) → Dodge Roll
The key is using Dodge Roll to cancel Leap Slam's heavy-landing recovery — this is what makes the build feel smooth.
Bossing loop:
Pre-spawn: Earthshatter ×N (stand at the boss's center, stack early)
Fight start: Infernal Cry + Seismic Cry (detonate all spikes → Heavy Stun)
Heavy Stun: swap to Weapon Set 2 → Hammer of the Gods
After anim: re-stack Earthshatter → wait for Glory → repeat
Filler: Perfect Strike (hold for the red flash)
Ascendancy (Warbringer)
Take the points in order (4 nodes total):
- Anvil's Weight — grants the Scavenged Plating buff and reduces enemy armour. The core opener — defense and damage in one.
- Warcaller's Bellow — massively cuts warcry cooldowns / boosts range; lets you spam Infernal Cry / Seismic Cry endlessly — the linchpin of the boss rotation.
- Renly's Training — more Block, and the prerequisite for Giant's Blood (2H mace + shield) — straight into the "giant club + tower shield" form.
- Turtle Charm — raises your block cap from 50% to 75% (cost: 30% of blocked damage still gets through). If you'd rather go full offense, swap it for Imploding Impacts.
Passive Tree
Priorities / Key Notables
- Giant's Blood — lets you wield a two-handed mace AND a shield at once (the Warbringer core).
- Polymathy cluster — a big chunk of Strength, lowering the attribute gate on high-tier weapons.
- Reduced Attribute Requirements small nodes — grab them as you pass; less Strength needed means more room for life and res.
Travel rules:
- At every three-way attribute choice, pick Strength.
- Take Dex / Int only when a gem requirement demands it.
- Weapon-set allocation:
- Red path: Weapon Set 1 (2H Mace + Shield)
- Green path: Weapon Set 2 (dual maces, for the warcry boss rotation)
- Uncolored: shared by both

| Body Armour | Maximize Armour (your main physical mitigation) + life |
| Helmet / Gloves / Boots | Maximize Armour |
| Boots | Armour + movement speed |
| Everything | Use Runes / mods to cover gem and gear attribute requirements |
Early Mapping (T1–T8)
- Get a Shield and activate Giant's Blood (2H Mace + Shield).
- Prepare 2 extra maces for the Weapon Set 2 dual-mace swap.
- Add Attack Speed on gloves / weapon — a huge feel improvement.
- Keep stacking life and res; cap all three resistances at 75% first.
- Start collecting the build's usual uniques.
Endgame (Maps T11+)
Core endgame uniques:
| Unique | Slot | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| The Surrender | Shield | Block + survivability — THE endgame life-saver |
| Thrillsteel | Helmet | Common, cheap, high value |
| Chernobog's Pillar | Weapon | A serious 2H Mace option |
| Defiance of Destiny | Amulet | Turns burst damage into a recovery buffer — massive survivability |
| Headhunter | Belt | Steal mods from magic monsters — explosive clear |
| Trampletoe | Boots | Triggers chain explosions once your damage is high enough |
Endgame mod checklist:
- All gear: max Armour + Life + resistances
- Ring / gloves: Mana Leech (one roll is enough — solves every mana problem)
- Ring / gloves: Lightning Damage to Attacks (lets Hammer of the Gods apply Shock on its own)
Mana Sustain
The one true fix:
A single Mana Leech roll on a ring or gloves makes every mana problem disappear instantly.
Stopgaps (transition period):
- Don't level Leap Slam / Infernal Cry / Seismic Cry — keep costs low.
- Level Infernal Cry moderately once it feels fine, or link Lifetap to pay with life instead.
Tips & Tricks
Animation canceling is required reading:
- Cancel Leap Slam's landing recovery with Dodge Roll — hold Dodge before you land.
- Skip this and the whole build feels sticky; do it right and it's silky smooth.
- It is "a core component of the build's power" (per the original guide).
Leap Slam not Priming?
- Check whether Leap Slam is over-leveled (dead trash can't be Primed).
- Check that Brink is linked (Prime without needing a Heavy Stun).
- Check Overpower (lets even a low-level Slam build enough stun).
Perfect Strike timing:
- Hold the skill; on the backswing the weapon flashes red.
- Release exactly on the flash for a massive damage multiplier.
- Miss the flash = ordinary damage, barely worth it.
Earthshatter pre-stacking:
- While the boss is in its intro animation / untargetable phase, stack 3–5 spikes under it.
- Double-Cry detonation at fight start = instant Heavy Stun — you're dealing damage from second one.
Weapon-swap prerequisite:
Only swap weapon sets once you own 2 extra maces of similar quality to your main. With only 1–2 good maces, don't swap — you'll lose damage.
Attribute bottlenecks:
- Pick Strength at every travel choice.
- Grab every Reduced Attribute Requirement node you pass.
- If still short, temporarily downgrade your weapon a tier and keep stacking Strength.
- The Hooded One / Doryani can re-roll points (useful when a gear change leaves gems short on attributes).
Summary
Boneshatter Warbringer is the most reliable Warrior league-start + mid-game build in 0.5.4:
- Zero unique dependency — playable from the campaign through T15.
- The ascendancy path is beautifully blunt: Anvil → Warcaller → Renly → Turtle Charm.
- The essentials: low-level Leap Slam + Brink + Overpower to keep Priming, animation canceling for smoothness, and one Mana Leech ring roll to fix mana forever.
- At endgame, The Surrender + Defiance of Destiny + Headhunter carry you smoothly into the farming phase.
