PoE2 devs shipped a PC to NVIDIA — shader stutter fix in driver 610.88 + patch 0.5.4e

For nearly two years, Path of Exile 2 players suffered 20–30 second freezes from a shader-compilation bug and 'Device Removed' crashes. NVIDIA wouldn't act without a reproducible case — so GGG shipped them an entire pre-configured PC. It worked: the fix is live in NVIDIA driver 610.88 plus game patch 0.5.4e.

A two-year nightmare: 20–30 second freezes

Since Path of Exile 2's Early Access launch in December 2024, players have battled two brutal problems: shader-compilation hitching and "Device Removed" crashes. On affected machines the game could freeze for 20–30 seconds mid-fight — long enough to get you killed — and the crashes grew far more common after NVIDIA driver 566.36.

NVIDIA didn't believe it — so GGG shipped them a PC

The PoE2 team had even pinpointed the exact driver code responsible, but NVIDIA wouldn't change anything without a reproducible case, and didn't believe the bug was as widespread as players reported. After roughly a year and a half of testing, GGG made an unusual move: they shipped NVIDIA an entire PC, configured exactly like the affected players' machines. Once NVIDIA's engineers could watch the crash happen on real hardware, an engineer was assigned — and within about two weeks, they had the answer.

The root cause: shader heap size

The culprit was an internal NVIDIA driver value called the "shader heap size" — it was simply too small, so the driver crashed whenever PoE2's engine made specific demands on the GPU's shader system. NVIDIA increased that value specifically for Path of Exile 2.

"Increasing an internal value called the 'shader heap size' caused the crash to go away — something they can change just for our game." — the PoE2 team (who reportedly celebrated the fix with champagne)

What you need to do

  • Update your graphics driver to NVIDIA Game Ready 610.88 (or newer).
  • Update the game to Patch 0.5.4e.
  • Expect a longer load the first time you enter each region while the shader cache rebuilds — after that it stays smooth.

Why it matters

This resolves the single biggest performance complaint the community has had for nearly two years — right before the pivotal 0.5.5 event and the road to 1.0. Endgame mapping, where the stutter and crashes hit hardest, should now feel dramatically more stable.
